My Story
Mayday, Mayday, Mayday... The moment I realized my boat was sinking, the gravity of the situation hit me like a freight train. I barely had time to process it before I made the call to the Coast Guard. The last words I said to them were, “Well, I gotta bail!” and with that, I dove into the cold, unforgiving dark of the Atlantic. The weight of the moment pressed down on me—sharks circling, my life now suspended between hope and fear—but all I could do was swim.
In the distance, I could see the faint glow of the coast, but the current was relentless, dragging me back with every stroke. My beloved '84 Marine Trader, a dream I poured my heart and soul into, was already lost to the depths—gone in a blink. All the memories of places sailed, the countless hours spent restoring her with friends, every inch of her polished and perfect—vanished in an instant.
For three hours that night, I fought the current, fought the darkness, and fought to stay alive. Days later, still haunted by that night, the idea for On the Hard... The Boater’s Life came to me. A place where boaters could connect, share their stories, and find the gear they need to live another day on the water. A place where we, the wild ones, could call home.
So, I invite you to join us. Share your journey. Shop for what you need. Sail, motor, float, surf, or swim—whatever way you live the life you love. The water’s waiting.
All the best,
Ken
